Phnom Sampeau
Phnom Sampov is a striking limestone mountain located on the road to Pailin about 16 km from Battambang city center. There is a wate and many stupas on top of the hill, as well as various shrines and grottos. During the Khmer Rouge era, the mountain was used to execute "enemies" of the regime, and a memorial to these victims can be found in the "killing caves." Two rusted artillery pieces that were used by the Cambodian government and their Vietnamese allies in the fight against the Khmer Rouge, which ended in 1996, are also on the mountain. Despite its tragic past, Phnom Sampov is a pleasant place to visit. The panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking, and the base of the mountain has a variety of food and drink stalls, making it a great place to pass the time. Thousands of bats emerge from caves in the hillside every evening at dusk to feed before returning at dawn. This natural wonder is truly a "must see" for visitors.
