Overview

Battambang is one of Cambodia’s most under rated destinations. Located 3 hours to the south of Siem Reap, this is a stunning countryside destination in an area known as the ‘rice bowl’ of the country. You will travel from Siem Reap to Battambang in a private air-conditioned car or van and then switch to a tuk tuk for your day tour.

Your day tour will begin with a village visit, driving a little off-road to see the fishing village, local plantations and including a ride on the Bamboo Train. From here your guide will take you on to Wat Banan temple, climbing all 365 stairs to reach the temple plateau, followed by a stop at the infamous Killing Caves.

Your last stop for the day is Phnom Sampeav, famed for its bat caves. Your guide will take you to his secret mountain spot where you will have a short climb to the top. As the sun sets, watch the millions of bats fly out for their evening meal before returning to Siem Reap.

What To Expect

Take a ride on the traditional Bamboo Train, a bamboo platform laid over 2 sets of wheels on a single track. In the old days this was used to transport goods between Battambang and Phnom Penh and was a typical mode of transport for farmers and villagers. Today, it takes you through the beautiful countryside to a little village you can explore on foot before returning to your starting point.

60 minutes • Admission Ticket Included

Wat Banan Temple
Climb the 365 stairs to marvel at Wat Banan, an Angkor era temple which sits on top of a hill close to the Sanker river. Banan is seldom frequented by tourists and outside of Cambodian holidays it is likely that you may be the only visitor.

60 minutes • Admission Ticket Included

Phnom Sampeau
Scale the side of a mountain leading to the 'secret bat cave' just before sunset where you will sit atop the mountain waiting for the millions of bats located inside the cave to awake. Marvel as this seemingly never-ending stream of fruit bats fly out of the cave and off into the countryside for their evening meal.

This was a wonderful day. We did so many things. My guide, Mr. Kim, was very knowledgeable, kind, and funny. I really enjoyed the experience.

I highly recommend this tour! If you’re looking to explore, experience, and learn more about Cambodia, this is a great tour. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable as well as accommodating. I liked how interactive it was as well!

You must book this day tour and cross your fingers that Kim is your guide. It’s a drive to Battambang, but in a comfortable air-conditioned car, and the minute you switch to a motorcycle-driven tuk tuk, once there, you know it’s going to be a fun adventure! Kim was awesome telling us the history of the city with a city tour. Then it’s off to the countryside, to ride the bamboo train. Great fun! Lunch at a local home/restaurant which was authentic and delicious! A somber visit to the killing caves, a beautiful temple, and the opportunity to view millions of bats emerging from a cave. It was all off the beaten track which made this trip so enjoyable! Kim made sure we were comfortable at all times and was fun and engaging! We had a fabulous, memorable time and are still talking about it!
Brilliant Tour with Excellent Tour Guide

This is a fairly long day tour but if you get our guide David it definitely won’t feel it! He was fantastic. His knowledge and passion for Cambodia was second to none. His English was perfect. He kept tailoring the tour to meet our interests which he expertly gauged as we went along. He was constantly pointing out things and pulling up for photos. We stopped at many places he thought may of interest along the way. On a personal level my husband and I really liked this guy, he was friendly, approachable, had a lovely way with him and was kind and courteous to everyone we met. We loved spending the day with him.
Train, Temple, and Cave, oh my!!

It was a wonderful experience from the moment we got in the car with Mr Som. He talked to us about the local ways and the local food we should try out. When we reached Battambang, our wonderful guide, Mr Kem gave us a run down on what to expect for the day. And what a day it was! We went around the various points of interest in the city, before going to the bamboo train, and then we used the train to zip by the gorgeous countryside to get to the next station and back again. We had a lovely lunch with the most delicious homemade chili sauce, and then we were off to Wat Banan. Throughout the day, Mr Kem regaled us with stories from Battambang, the mythologies surrounding the city, the hills, and the temple. This is a man who clearly loves and knows his city and he shared that love with us.

On our way from the temple and to the killing cave, we passed by some gorgeous fields of rice, made more vibrant with the storm clouds around and Mr Kem stopped to let us take some pictures around. We had to give the killing cave a miss because of heavy rain but, honestly the day was so enjoyable that we didn't really mind. We did get to see the bat cave and I am glad that we did because it wasn't like anything we have seen before.

On our way back, we asked Mr Som to drop us off at Pub Street (for dinner) instead of the hotel, and he was happy to oblige.

All in all, a highly recommended tour.
