If something can easily connect you to a certain culture no matter where you are in the world, that is food. When you arrive to a new place, trying the most popular local dishes is a great intro to the local culture and, in many cases, even an ice-breaker to make conversation with people living there.

Learning to cook Khmer food is a great way to introduce your Cambodian experience to your friends.

A brilliant day in the countryside
Helli01, 24-01-2020
We went to Kampot specifically to go to the cookery course at La Plantation, having read the reviews (although you could get a taxi from Kep, which we much preferred to the now rather seedy Kampot).

We had great fun chopping, grating, grinding and slicing all kinds of spices, veg and meat and fish to make 3 of the best tasting dishes we had in the whole of Cambodia.

With a free tour and pepper tasting plus the buffalo safari we had a really great day - and felt like a world away from hot and dusty Kampot.
Simply wonderful - not to be missed!

Spending a day at La Plantation is a wonderful experience from being picked up in Kampot (optional extra), and being driven through the beautiful countryside, to a tour of the pepper plantation to the cooking class itself (and then sharing your efforts for a delicious lunch) to a pepper tasting to an afternoon buffalo tour (optional extra). Our chef was an inspiration and engaged with the group in such a delightful and informative manner. Indeed, the entire team is so warm, welcoming and passionate about what they do and in making this a day to remember. La Plantation is an experience not to be missed. I also admire the owner's commitment to product excellence, sustainability and in uplifting the local community through education, jobs and skills and through our bookings we contribute to that as well. I came away with a magnificent cultural experience and knowledge of pepper. My only regret was having to leave and I hope one day La Plantation can offer overnight accommodation in this magnificent setting. Well done guys, you can be proud of what has been achieved here!

A really enjoyable morning cooking 3 dishes. Was was very well organised and we were all involved in the process. The chef explained things really clearly and was very informative about new ingredients.
Loved it!

We had an awesome day at La Plantation - we were picked up in Kampot town (extra cost $7pp) and taken out to the pepper farm for a great tour and pepper tasting before the class started. The class itself was great, we made three delicious meals and ate them for lunch. The chef was great, and spoke Khmer, French and English - very impressive. After the class finished we had about an hour and a half to relax with some pepper ice cream and glasses of wine before being dropped back to Kampot. We highly recommend this activity!
Large group for cooking class

We got a ride from the store in Kampot to the Plantation and did the cooking class. The tour of the Plantation was great and then they do a pepper tasting. We bought lots of pepper and it was fun to taste how different the peppers are from one another. I would suggest doing the tour, pepper tasting, and just getting lunch at the restaurant. Order the Beef Lok Lak! We made three dishes during the cooking class but the class was so large that all my husband and I did was cut vegetables. If the class sizes were smaller I think this would have been a lot of fun but I didn't learn much. Other people had more interesting jobs like making homemade curry or homemade coconut milk. Then you all eat together and you can order ice cream. Get the pepper ice cream! Then we waited an hour for the taxi to take us back.
