What To Expect

Today’s tour will begin at 07:30. Set out early for a visit to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, a tranquil forested compound one-hour from Phnom Penh. Upon arrival, meet with the local staff who will explain the day’s programs and give background information about the centre.

Begin the Phnom Tamao tour with a walk through the 7 hectare compound alongside a caretaker. See more than 100 Asian Sun Bears and black bears who have been rescued from poachers and learn about Cambodia’s wildlife trade. There are also other animals, more than 12,000 in total, such as elephants and gibbons that are being rehabilitated and cared for at Phnom Tamao.

Although the animals are fenced off, there are plenty of opportunities to observe them. Join the caretakers to feed the bears and watch the gibbons as they swing from tree to tree. This is an incredible chance to see the diversity of Cambodia’s wildlife up close!

A delicious picnic lunch will be served in a bamboo hut at the centre. Saying goodbye to the staff and animals, wrap up the Phnom Tamao tour and drive onwards to Tonle Bati temple. Tonle Bati is a small Angkorian-style temple in nearly perfect condition. The temple sits aside a lake of the same name and is a popular place for locals to come on the weekends to escape from the big city. Enjoy a short visit of the temple or opt for a quick nap in a lakeside hammock before returning to the city.

I recommend signing up for behind the scenes experience.

A friend and I went to the "Free the Bears at Phnom Tamao. We were picked up at the hotel that I was staying and then returned. The driver Chanroeun and tour guide during our travels Pannina were wonderful. They informed us of the culture and life of individuals living in Cambodia. Vanny was our zoo guide. He informed us about the bears and the other animals at the zoological park and wildlife rescue. He truly appeared to care about his work with the animals. The behind the scenes gives you a chance to make the bears their meals then watch how they figure out getting the food out of its object. It is important to try to have the bears maintain close to how they would get their food in the wild. Lunch was included and it was so tasty! I highly recommend this venture.
They are amazing!
